The Lithuanian Mathematical Society

Lithuania was under Soviet domination from August 1940, when it officially became a constituent republic of the Soviet Union except for a period during World War II when it was conquered by Germany. However the policies of glasnost and perestroika adopted by the USSR through the 1980s led to a reform movement in Lithuania. There was a desire for independence and attempts to start up national organisations which could reform the Lithuanian system of science. As part of this movement, the Lithuanian Scientific Society was founded on 7 October 1989. Its aim was:-

... was the development and implementation of advanced organisational principles that would form the basis for the system of science and education.

The Lithuanian Mathematical Society is a section of the Lithuanian Scientific Society.
