  1. The Lecturers of the St Andrews Mathematical Colloquium, 1968.

    The following gave seven lectures:

    (a) Professor Patrick Billingsley (Chicago) - "Weak Convergence of Probability Measures."

    The following gave five lectures:

    (b) Professor Nathan Jacobson (Yale) - "Quadratic Jordan Algebras."

    (c) Professor Frank F Bonsall (Edinburgh) - "Normed Algebras."

    (d) Professor Nicolaas G de Bruijn (Eindhoven) - "Fourier Analysis and Generalized Functions."

A course of four lectures were also given by:

    (e) Professor Hans Zassenhaus (Ohio State) - "The work of J H M Wedderburn."

  2. Comments on these lectures.

    2.1. Nathan Jacobson wrote:

We had a very pleasant summer in 1968, lecturing in Scotland and sight-seeing in Scotland and Ireland. I was invited to give a course of lectures at the St Andrews Colloquium of the Edinburgh Mathematical Society.
    2.2. Edmund Robertson wrote:
I attended Jacobson's course that he gave on Quadratic Jordan algebras at the Colloquium and learnt much, not only about Jordan algebras, but also on how to lecture combining both excitement and clarity.
2.3. N H Bingham wrote in the paper (jointly authored with A J Ostaszewski) The Steinhaus Theorem and Regular Variation: De Bruijn and after:
The first author [N H Bingham] was fortunate to hear a course of lectures by N G de Bruijn at the St Andrews Colloquium in 1968, when he was a second-year research student. Both authors have been influenced by his work, and take pleasure in dedicating this paper to his memory.

    ST ANDREWS COLLOQUIUM, 1968.

The Edinburgh Mathematical Society has arranged a colloquium at St. Andrews, Scotland, on July 10-20, 1968. Four courses, each consisting of about four lectures on various topics, will be held as follows: Jordan Algebras, by Nathan Jacobson; Normed Algebras, by F. F. Bonsall; Fourier Analysis and Generalized Functions, by N. G. de Bruijn; and Weaker Convergence Methods in Probability, by P. Billingsley. In addition, H Zassenhaus will deliver four lectures on the work of J H M Wedderburn. The programme will also include informal talks and discussions. Further details and application forms may be obtained from the Colloquium Secretary, Dr J B Tatchell. The Mathematical Institute, North Haugh, St Andrews, Scotland.
