in Mathematics

Centro de Álgebra da Universidade de Lisboa,   Departamento de Matemática

In algebra I work in group and semigroup theory. I am particularly interested in the study of finiteness conditions and their closure properties, including conditions that arise from the study of semigroup presentations and the related theory of string rewriting systems. I also work in (mainly infinite) combinatorics where I am interested in groups acting on graphs and also on other relational structures.

I am a research fellow at the Centro de Álgebra da Universidade de Lisboa. I hold an FCT Ciência Research Fellowship.

Before taking up this position I held an EPSRC Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the School of Mathematics and Statistics of the University of St Andrews, with a project in combinatorial group and semigroup theory entitled Finiteness Conditions and Index in Semigroups and Monoids.

Preceding this I was a Research Fellow at the School of Mathematics of the University of Leeds working with Prof. J. K. Truss and Prof. H. D. Macpherson on an EPSRC funded project in infinite combinatorics and model theory, including graph theory and infinite permutation group theory, entitled Homogeneous structures, bipartite graphs, and partial orders.
